How can I explain this to our cats? I know that in “cat language” it is a compliment to bring your owners gifts. I do appreciate the thought…really. But what does it say that our cats bring us sacrifices that are ALREADY DEAD AND HAVE BEEN LAYING AT THE BASE OF OUR DRIVEWAY FOR A WEEK????
I think that the fact that they have to skillfully hunt and kill an animal for their offering would mean they take pride in their work. Apparently our cats are lazy and lacking self respect! Do they think that I haven’t noticed the rather large squirrel that I’ve been driving around each and every day…until tonight?
Of course, I didn’t notice right away that it was no longer blocking our driveway. I didn’t even notice anything unusual when Savannah and I went out side on the screened in porch to feed the cats their dinner tonight. Looking back, it was odd that the cats were no where in sight as we opened their food container. Were they hiding at the base of the steps waiting in anticipation to see our joyful reaction?
If so, they were greatly disappointed! As I was bent over the food bowl, Savannah started saying sheepishly, “Uh, Mommy? (pause) Mommy? (pause) Mommy?” I turned around and said, “What is it?” Since it was dark outside, I didn’t see what she was referring to right away. Then I noticed our doormat was moved. What’s that on the mat? A toy? “Oh Lordy Jesus, Savannah, get in the house!!!!” Seeing that squirrel laid out on it’s back, white belly up and legs apart, with mouth hanging open, sent shivers up my spine and made me gag!
Now the question is, what am I going to do with it? When I told Jeremy what happened he just gave me an “I told you so” glance and said he could fix the problem before the end of the night. But taking the cats to “a big farm where they can run and play all day” isn’t what I have in mind. Do you think if I leave it out there long enough the cats will realize their gift wasn’t the hit of the weekend and take it away themselves? No. Probably not. But I am seriously reconsidering going out there to feed them again in the morning…it gives me the heebee-geebee’s just thinking about it!

Would pre-killed offerings be considered “fast food”…or not-so-fast food?????
