I slept in a little bit this morning. Savannah gets to sleep with me when Jeremy is gone, so it was nice snuggling up with her until about 7:30. She doesn’t snore which is a nice perk for me! :)
We weren’t in a huge hurry, but I had to keep the kids on task so we could all get dressed, have breakfast, and make it to preschool on time. The thing that always slows us down is putting on coats. Emery rather enjoys me chasing him with his jacket, all the while saying, “C’mon…we gotta go…c’mon…let’s go”. Savannah can put on her own coat, but here lately it makes her cry because her hair gets static and is flying all over her face. I try to help and end up shocking her. It only makes her wail louder, “You SHOT me Momma!”
Today was no exeption and once the drama ceased, we all piled into the car. Savannah and I were deep in conversation on the way to school about some men from the electric company that we passed, and how they get up to fix the wires above the road. Then I saw something horrible.
We weren’t even up to it yet, but already it was making me sick to my stomach. And by the looks on the faces of many people standing in the middle of the road, I wasn’t the only one. Since I did not see the accident happen, I do not have a clue as to how the 2 vehicles could have ended up in the way they did. But given that we were on a very busy highway where people, including myself, travel way too fast, I guess anything is possible.
I am pretty sure the crash took place no more than 2 mintues prior to our arrival. There was just not enough traffic backed up behind it to justify much more time than that. Since our lane was still clear, we proceded to drive past.
There were several cars parked in the median and people who had gotten out to help, but there was no way anybody could do anything. They were all just standing around in shock. As I got up to the actual scene of the crash, I noticed that the car on the bottom was upside down. I hadn’t realized that before. It was hanging above what I would guess to be a 30 foot drop onto a pasture below. The only thing holding it was a cluster of trees. It was completely smashed in on the right side and I could see inside. I was unable to make out any bodies, all I could see were branches.
Sitting on top of that car was a white pickup truck.
As we rode past and I took in the entire scene, my thoughts turned to how easily we could have been involved in the accident. What is 2 minutes? Forget about the coats. Skip brushing your teeth. Wait to feed the cats until ya get back home.
I got pretty shook up at this point and as tears filled my eyes, I told Savannah and Emery we needed to say a prayer for those people involved in the crash. But first, I thanked God for my own pokey little kids and all the 2 minutes I’m not even aware of that He has kept us safe.

i thanked god many times on tuesday for timing..timing of a doctor visit with yucky blood work, timing for a nurse who called to say GO NOW. timing of a non busy emergency room for mr b. god’s time is surely the best time even when we get behind in the times. i am glad you taught savannah to say a prayer for the people in the crash…every time i hear a siren i say a prayer and i wish i had the “time” to teach others to do the same. the clock is always ticking, even when we don’t hear the call to be still and know. miz b
How many times we have all had a situation like that. It reminds me of the e-mail that went around about all the people
that missed being in the towers on 9-11. Safety, to me, has become something that is always on my mind. Having
a fireman for a husband does not help! Praise God everyone is OK!
