Yesterday we went with our homeschool group to Oakhurst Community Garden in Decatur. I didn’t know what to expect really. The fieldtrip description mentioned dirt and worms, and that’s all I needed to know. My kids were gonna love it!
I ended up pleasantly surprised. While there were in fact plenty of dirt and worms, there were also amazing garden plots like this lettuce! Doesn’t that look delicious?
I had never heard of a community garden before, so if you’re like me, let me tell you all about it. In a city, with homes close together or people living in apartments, there isn’t a place for people to have gardens. So they set aside a plot of land, and if you wish to have a garden of some kind, you can rent some space to grow your goods.
This garden was absolutely beautiful with lots of old, oaks and maples shading much of the property. There were places to sit and have a picnic. They also had a spot to care for bees, complete with a chicken pen for fresh eggs. A trash can set out by the curb collects compost from the neighbors and the volunteers that work there add it to the leaves and grass clippings for the perfect mulch.
I was pretty inspired after being there. See those compost bins? I’m going to try to talk my husband into making me a couple of those. And then I’m going to talk him into tilling up a garden spot. And planting tomatoes, beans, corn, strawberries, blueberries, fresh herbs, lettuce, onions, potatoes, … Mmmmm…I can taste it now.
In my dreams!
