I remember the last time it snowed in Georgia. We had just moved back in to our house after the fire. It was Christmas 2010.
Fast forward to 2014. In January, we were thrilled to get enough snow to make this snowman head. Not enough for a body, mind you. But we did make a head and had fun running around in the flurries one afternoon.
By the next week, the kids were outside doing their schoolwork in shorts on a quilt in the front yard! LOL… that’s life in the south.
And then… I can hear Gomer Pyle now, “Surprise, surprise, surprise!!!”… it snowed AGAIN!!! This time it was a whopper. Lots of ice was predicted with this winter storm, and in the good ole state of Georgia, that means chaos and downed power lines. So, like every good red neck, we went to the store for bread and milk, stocked up on firewood, made sure the liquor cabinet had plenty of Bailey’s, and piled all our sleeping bags and blankets next to the fireplace along with flashlights and emergency candles.
We were ready! And since my parents do not have a fireplace to use in case of a power outage, Nanny and Grampa came over with Gracie to wait it out.
As the snow began falling outside, we made batches of chili and hot cocoa. We stayed up late playing games, working puzzles and watching movies. At one point, all the males in the household decided they “needed” to go out and “see just how bad it really is”, because they are men and that’s what men do.
Thankfully we never lost our power, but we had a great excuse to take a couple days off work and school. To play with our neighbors and “skate” down the street. To eat too much junk food and drink too much Bailey’s! To hunker down with family, laugh, and relax.
