Little Emery is such a busy boy. So different from his sister who enjoys playing quietly by herself. When she was 16 months old, if I needed a shower, I’d set her in front of Seasme Street knowing full well when I got through showering, shaving, blowdrying, curling, moisturizing, and dressing she would be sitting in the same spot, laughing at the TV.
This weekend supported 2 reminders that this is just not so with our little man.
Case #1: After letting the kitties in to eat their breakfast and spending some time playing with the kids, Mommy decided to hop on the computer to check her email. From the other room she heard her son’s delightful laughter, and she smiled to herself. Once reality started sinking in, she realized his sister was sitting just to her left. What was making him laugh so hard? Maybe he’s playing with the cat. Oh no, maybe he’s torturing the cat!!! She thought she better go check it out. Upon peering around the corner to the playroom, this is what she found…
Do you see the empty bowl sitting on the couch? That was full of cat food. Can you see the tiny brown pellets all over the floor? Yeah, cat food. He’d pick it up and throw it at the gray kitten (not pictured) and then laugh hysterically. Do you see the black cat under the yellow chair in the corner? He’s thinking “if I stay real still, maybe he won’t notice me.” And in case you can’t tell it from the picture, Emery is munching on a mouth full of Meow Mix.
Case #2: Daddy is watching football upstairs. Mommy is watching a movie downstairs. The kids get up from their naps and Daddy decides he wants to take everyone out for dinner. Mommy finds out about this via the 3 year old. The movie is almost over and Mommy can hear Daddy walking around upstairs getting ready to go, so she stays put to finish the movie. Once it’s over, she walks upstairs and at the top of the steps is greeted by Daddy with a wet head. “Were you in the shower?”, she asks. “Yes”, he replies. “Well, where is Emery?”, she wonders aloud. “I dunno, ” he says.
Then they hear footsteps in the kitchen. They turn to see a happy little boy with something all over his hair. As Mommy approaches the kitchen, she notices this:
This is the fruit bowl that sits in the middle of their kitchen table. The banana that is open is completely empty inside. He ate every bit of it. How he got it open along the side like that will forever be a York family mystery. But at least they solved the mystery of the sticky, gray substance in his hair. And after a quick shampoo in the sink, they were off to a wonderful family dinner!
