Tonight we had some bad weather in our area. We were under a severe thunderstorm warning and tornado watch. The kids and I were picking up their rooms and getting ready for bed when I heard the phone start ringing. I didn’t feel like racing to catch it so I thought I would just check the caller id when I got back downstairs and call back whoever it was.
But then my cell phone rang immediately afterwards, so I thought it might be important. Jeremy was just walking in the door so I asked him to check and see who it was. “If it was my mom”, I said, “Call her back. She was going to alert us if the bad weather was heading our way.”
Sure enough it was her and there was definitely some nasty stuff coming in our direction. So Jeremy had the kids come downstairs and sit with him on the couch while they watched the weather forecaster monitor the storms. I finished up their rooms, which was making Savannah very nervous. She wanted me on the couch with everybody else because it was “safer”, she said.
Savannah gets quite hysterical when it storms. Even when we are all together, she just cries and panicks over every little thing. (What can I say…the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.) So when the wind picked up and hail began pelting the windows, her whimpering grew louder.
Around that same time Jeremy looked outside and saw the clouds doing some strange things. Some were moving quickly in one direction while the others were moving slowly in the opposite direction. And the trees were all over the place! He told all of us to book it to the basement. Which we did! Quickly!!!
Once downstairs I turned the TV on down there to keep up with what was going on. The storm we were in was almost over, but there was another huge one on the way that was wrecking havoc around Altanta at that time. It was moving fast though, and they predicted it to be in our area in less than 30 minutes.
We waited in the basement for a little while and distracted the kids with some popsicles Jeremy found in the freezer. Pretty soon Savannah called us into the other room. “Look! Look!” She was pointing at the TV.
I didn’t know what she was so excited about. “It’s shrinking!!!” Then I saw that the big storm which was predicted to hit us was a lot smaller. She was ecstatic. “Mommy, I prayed to God and told Him I was scared and He’s shrinking it!!!”
Jeremy and I shared a smile and then we decided to go back upstairs. The TV was still on the same channel and we got to the top of the steps just in time to hear the weather forecaster say, “Well, I don’t know what’s happened. There was a serious weather system heading right towards Conyers but it seems to have disappeared. We are checking our satellites now to see if there is an error…”
No need to check your satellites weather woman. It was just God. Showing off to a scared 5 year old little girl.

It was an exciting hour or so to say the least!
My girls had a similar reaction…since we don’t have a basement, we had them go to our bedroom since it’s on the main level.
The girls and I watched a little of Hannah on Disney to distract from the weather.
I’m so glad God answers the prayers of ALL His children!
Sure hope we don’t have to go through any of this again for a LONG time!
This is wonderful! I love how children view God. What a great opportunity you and Jeremy had to grow her faith!
I’m very thankful she prayed that prayer; we were at Target in Conyers when all of the storms hit. What a great witness and such faith.
It was definetly a bad storm, since I was driving in it and getting pelted with hail. I was as scared as Savannah! Tell her thank you for praying for it to stop!
That’s so sweet. What a great way for God to show himself to Savannah.
Don’t you just love their thought processes. We had very bad weather Tuesday night too- oldest DS (11) was at baseball practice and as
the team was running for a building to take cover in they saw “God’s Thumbs Up” in the clouds and they all said they knew they’d be ok!!
Amen!! I have chills!!! Our God is an Awesome God who yes speaks to his little ones!!!
