My mom and I have talked about camping out with the kids for the last 2 years. It just hasn’t happened. So I decided that this weekend would be the one. The days have been warm but the evenings cool. Perfect for a fire and a camp out.
We thought it best to do this at their house, that way if anybody got tired of camping, it was a short walk to a cozy bed. And a bathroom. But that may have been just for me and mom.
Here is my dad perfecting his fire. Just call him “Lord of the Flame”. He’s always a willing participant of camp fires. Or fires of any kind, for that matter.
And what is a camp fire without s’mores? I thought we’d do them a little differently though this time. Instead of graham crackers and chocolate bars, how about fudge striped cookies? It’s practically the same thing. But somehow, they tasted more like Moon Pies. But who’s complaining???
Next it was time for bed. The four of us took flashlights and books to read. I was surprised how quickly the kids fell asleep! Nanny was next to go, but I just couldn’t sleep. The temps ended up dropping into the 40’s and I buried myself into my sleeping bag and finished a book I started earlier in the day (Promise Me by Richard Paul Evans ). At some point close to dawn, both Nanny and I retreated to the warmth of beds and hot showers. The kids loved it and slept later than they do at home in their own beds!
