This weekend we headed to Guntersville, Alabama for the Watkins family reunion. This is Jeremy’s grandmothers’ side of the family. From what I understand, his great-grandparents started this tradition in the 1970’s, for the entire family to get together every other year, and it’s never been missed.
Grandma ‘Dessa is the oldest of 9 children, seven of which are still living, and all of them were at the reunion, coming from as far away as Arkansas to be there. In the twelve years that I’ve been a part of this family, I’ve been to 3 of these and always had a great time. During our time together there is a lot of eating, visiting and harassing that goes on. There is also swimming for the kiddos. On the last morning, before departing home, someone shares a devotion and we recognize anybody who has passed on since the last reunion.
It’s pretty incredible to look around and see 7 families, in some cases with 4 generations represented. I wonder what it’s like to be one of the siblings. To see your brothers and sisters, their spouses and children, and their children’s children, etc and know that “our mama and daddy started this”. It reminds me of the song by Brad Paisley “All Because Two People Fell in Love”:
You know, to me it’s all so clear
Every one of us is here
All because two people fell in love
