I printed out some Valentine’s coloring cards for the kids to make today. It was the end of our school day and I was still in my jammies, so I told them to color them however they like, and they could give them to whomever they wanted.
A little while later, as I was getting out of the shower, I saw Emery peeking around the corner. “Mom?”
“Hold on a minute, Babe. Let me finish getting dressed.”
“Okay”, I heard shyly.
I knew he wanted to show me the Valentine he colored for me. I hurried and got dressed, and with a towel on my head went into the bedroom where he was waiting. He held the card behind his back. He kept looking from me to the ground, so finally I asked, “What’s up? Whatcha got?”
“Ummm… Mom? I kinda have a crush on a girl at church. Her name is Jaden. She’s in the 3rd grade.”
“Oh. I see. So did you make her a Valentine?”
He beamed! “Yes! Is it good?”
Of course it was good and he was so cute. But an older woman? What??? I was laughing so hard on the inside, but a little sad too. A crush already? I thought boys thought girls were gross until about 7th grade. Savannah had her first crush last year (lucky for her I wasn’t blogging much then). Obviously it’s a normal part of growing up, it’s just crazy how quickly these things sneak up on you.
And so it begins…. boys, girls, crushes, drama, heartache… it may be too much for this mothers heart to take.
