Our school year ended this spring with a Nature Study that the kids both loved and talked about all the time. In an effort to keep their interest alive, I thought it would be fun to study Botany for science this year. There have been a lot of big science words this time around, and much less enthusiasm since we are no longer walking around outside, finding cool stuff and then writing or drawing about it. It’s been painful month for all 3 of us!
A couple of weeks ago we read that the two main parts of the food chain are producers and consumers. Humans and animals are consumers, because we “consume” other plants and animals for our food. Plants on the other hand, are producers. They produce their own food within themselves for nourishment.
At lunch today, for reasons I now don’t remember, the topic of producers and consumers came up. I reminded them that plants are producers because they make their own food. This is where Emery added, “Well…plants and Komono Dragons.”
“Komono Dragons?”
“Yes. Komono Dragons are producers too.”
“Why do you say that?”
“Because they eat their young.”

In history this year we are learning all about the Middle Ages. There is so much fighting!!! People taking land, creating amazing kingdoms, and then other people who want the land and battle them for it. Over and over and over again!
In today’s lesson, the word “allies” came up. I didn’t know if my kids knew what that meant, so I asked them.
“Yeah. I know what that is,” Savannah said right away. “It’s when a group of people who used to be your enemy now fights with you on your side. Kinda like a frenemy.”
That girl watches too much Disney Channel.
