On Saturday morning the kids and I headed south to volunteer for an organization called Feed My Starving Children. This non-profit provides hand packed meals, specifically formulated for malnourished children, and ships them to more than 70 countries around the world.
There are many ways for people to help FMSC accomplish this each year. They need financial support, but they also rely on children and adults to help pack the meal bags. This is where we came in, along with my new friend Edith and her daughter Sarah.
At each station, packers put 4 scoops into a bag: vitamins, vegetables, soy, and rice. Then the bag is weighed for accuracy (adding or removing rice if needed), sealed, and placed in a packing box. Once there are 36 bags in a box, it is ready for shipping, and then you start on the next box.
The packing event was really well organized and we all had a great time filling our boxes. Unfortunately this was a mobile packing site and only comes to this part of Florida once a year. There are many other mobile sites and also several permanent packing sites for anyone interested in participating. Check their website for a location near you!
