Last year, one week before Mother’s Day, I decided I wanted to do something cute with the area around our mailbox. I went outside with a shovel and “claw thing”, removed a 2′ x 4′ layer of sod, and went about the task of breaking up the soil to prepare it for beautiful flowers.
Or at least, that was the plan. The sod came up, no problem. But the soil underneath? I’m not even sure I can call it “soil”. It was more like rock mixed with concrete mixed with clay. It was awful.
A few days later Jeremy bought me some plants to put around it, but there was no way I could put anything in that ground and expect it to live. So I put the flowers in a bed near the house and left the mailbox area alone.
I’m sure my neighbors were thrilled, 11 months later, when they saw me finally tackling the mound of dirt around our mailbox. And this time, I was thrilled to have helpers! The three of us went to Lowe’s and bought landscaping pavers to create a retaining wall for adding quality soil. Then we each picked out colorful flowers. Not long after…. Ta-Da…. a pretty site in the front yard. Yay!!!
