Savannah started bugging me a few weeks ago about wanting to have a playdate. I agreed that it had been a while, but told her (many times) just to wait until school got out for the summer, then we’d have plenty of time for our friends.
Last Thursday night was her preschool program and graduation. On the way to the truck when it was over she said, “Okay Mom, schools out. Can I have a friend over now?” (sigh).
So today I made good on my promise. Her friend of choice is Jaca, whom she has known since they were both infants. (As a matter of fact, they were born only hours apart). And this was a first for me…Jaca was dropped off this morning around 10:00 and will be picked up later this afternoon. So it’s the first time she has had a friend over and the friend’s mom didn’t stay for me to “play with”. It is a little strange, but it is bringing back memories of how much I loved to play with my friends growing up.
Here is a picture I snapped of the two of them while we were outside playing in the water:
I also took some pictures as they were making and eating their special lunches. Just for fun I laid out some graham crackers, peanut butter, red and green icing tubes, sprinkles, and colored sugar. They each had a plate and a knife and got to do whatever they wanted with the stuff on the table. OMG, was it ever fun!
This was taken right before Jaca told me, “Ms Jodi, this is the BEST lunch I have EVER had”. Even Emery got in on the action:
I have really had to get outside of my comfort zone today, seeing as I usually focus on eating balanced meals and keeping my house nice and tidy. But today I just wanted the girls to have fun…and me too! Right now there are toys from one end of my backyard to the other, wet towels in the foyer, juice boxes on the floor of my kitchen, popcorn and greasy fingerprints on the leather chairs in the theater room, and I’m afraid to even look in Savannah’s bedroom! Yikes! (my blood pressure is going up just typing that!)
But I think it was worth it. Since I was not obsessing over cleaning, I got to overhear many of their conversations, too many to list here, that were simply priceless. They played house and had tea parties. Then they played Cinderella. And here is what I thought was really funny. A few years back another mutual friend of ours invited these 2 to come to a princess party and the invitation said to wear a princess dress. Well, all 3 of them coincidentally came as Cinderella. Check it out:
So it was no surprise to me that they decided to act out the Cinderella movie today as they played. Well, at first they took turns, one being a step-sister and the other being Cinderella. After they each had a turn, neither one of them wanted to be Cinderella anymore. They both wanted to be the bossy step-sisters! I was cracking up as they sat next to each other on the couch yelling to a non-exsistent Cinderella who was apparently in the other room, “Get my shoes! I want my dress! Hurry Cinderella! Hurry!!!!”
What in the world happened to everybody wanting to be the princess full of manners and grace? I guess at 4 years old it’s more appealing to be the boss!

THAT is an adorable story….I love that they were yelling at Cinderella….how FUNNY! I love to listen to kids talk to each other…just the things they talk about and what is important to them. Days likeyou had today are priceless, and gone all too quickly! Enjoy them!
Oh boy…just wait…every day during the summer will be like today (almost). I say having friends over is not
as easy as I thought BUT it is a part of childhood that the kids really enjoy. I’m trying to enjoy it more! The
good news is…Savannah will have playdates at someone’s house too and it’s PAYBACK time-Ha.
you are a good friend and mommie! glad the girls had a great time. i will be the ugly step sister in 12 days when i go to spend 3 weeks with liz, andrew and mary catherine. unfortunaley, she will still be in school the entire time i am there, so we can only play on saturdays and sundays, but i intend to be a great fairy godmother, ugly step sister, rapunzel, sleeping beauty and nana! loved the pictures. have a great summer.
Good for you for letting go! They’re remember the fun…and you’ll forget the mess…and everyone will be better for days like this!
What a great mom you are. I am like you and have to mentally prepare myself for messes. My mil always used to walk around behind the kids and clean up after them–it drove me crazy. I decided not to be like that–I do have to psyche myself up for it though. It is a special time–and will be gone before you know it.
WHAT FUN! What a wonderful mother you are, I’m proud of you for letting go of the meals and the cleanliness, what a great thing you did!!
