After we found out we were going to be in Florida for a year or so, I learned that my aunt and uncle had rented a condo in Bonita Springs, about 2 hours from us, for the winter. My parents were making a trip to see them, so the kids and I decided to make a day of it as well.
When I realized their condo wasn’t too far from Ft Myers, I asked them if they wanted to meet us at the Ford/Edison Winter Estate for a tour. Emery did a research paper on Henry Ford this year and I thought it would be a cool way to end his project.
The houses on the estate were very nice and I was impressed with the layout of the place. But by far, the most fascinating things on the property were the trees they planted (from Asia, I think). The one above was planted in 1920. It’s huge! This tree, along with many others, were there to produce rubber for automobile tires.
We spent all day there and had lunch next door on the Caloosahatchee River. The kids were tired of walking and went back to the condo to chill out in front of the TV for a while. By evening, they were ready to hit the road once more to check out the shells and sunset on Ft Myers beach. Beautiful…
