As if the Christmas decorations all over Walmart and the holiday music on the radio weren’t enough to clue me in that I only have 6 weeks left to do my Christmas shopping, the over abundance of catalogs in my mailbox would be a dead giveaway!
Our office was having a Bible study one day and we were talking about contentment. The question was asked, “what is something that you do to ward off the gimme’s?” One of our employees said that he refuses to look at sales flyers and catalogs that are delivered to his house. Hmmm…interesting! How many times have I carelessly leafed through a catalog and suddenly felt like I “needed” new clothes, shoes, the latest and greatest iPod, color coordinated cookware, jewlery, laptop, updated sofa and loveseat, etc.
After that study I began throwing sales stuff away before flipping the first page. It’s worked great but I can’t help but think about what a waste it is. I’ve always wondered if there is a way to get off those mailing lists. And now…thanks to my sister…I know that YES, there is a way and I am so happy she brought it to my attention!
It’s called Catalog Choice. I’ve already signed up and gotten started cancelling the majority of catalogs that are sent to me. They say it can take up to 10 weeks for the unsolicited mail to cease, so that won’t help with the bulk of Christmas catalogs, but it will be something to look forward to in 2008. Reduce mailbox clutter. Less time spent sorting mail. Less waste. Saving energy. Helping preserve the environment. Maybe I should go hug a tree now.
