Ever since we started homeschooling, Savannah is all about being the teacher. She plays school with her stuffed animals. She bosses her brother around “teaches” Emery about things in books or on puzzles or outside. She has even mentioned being a teacher when she grows up (among other things, but for this post, let’s just stick to teachers).
Yesterday she and I got ready for church. We leave first because I am a volunteer at the 8:30 nursery hour, and basically she is an early riser and since she gets herself up and dressed, I take her with me. Jeremy brings Emery and meets me there for the 2nd service.
I took her to breakfast at Starbucks (or “Fourbucks” as my husband lovingly refers to it) and then I tried to drop her off at her Sunday School class. There was a sign on the door that read “we have no teachers for the 4 and 5 year olds today, please take them into the service with you”. Hmmm…I wasn’t going into the service, so I guess she could come and help out with the babies.
Only there were no babies yesterday. And the 2 and 3 year olds teachers were out as well. So Amy (the other nursery worker) and I ventured in together to watch the 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, and 5’s. Whew!
There was about 8 children in all I guess. It’s wasn’t too bad except for the noise level. And since we aren’t regular teachers, like with a lesson, we were really just babysitting until their 2nd hour teachers did arrive. So we got out a bunch of toys and crayons and coloring sheets.
One of the toy boxes contained a bunch of wild animals. Zebras, lions, giraffes, tigers, alligators, etc. Well, let me tell you, Savannah was all over it! She grabbed that box and her excitement got the attention of a few other kids.
(At this point, think back to a few weeks ago when we took the kids to the history museum.)
Next thing I know, I hear her saying, “On the Serengeti, this is how the animals eat. They don’t have refrigerators and microwaves like we do. They kill each other and eat them.” And then I turn around and see that she has taken the cute little zebra and placed it in the open mouth of the alligator. More kids gather around her as she shows them how 2 tigers will chase down an elephant. It’s laying on it’s side and the tigers are “eating” it. The giraffe is the next to go. What a feast they had in room 108 Sunday morning!
It’s more than likely not the lesson the teacher had prepared for the day, but the kids all seemed to enjoy it. I’m just wondering what kinds of things were said to the parents over lunch yesterday afternoon. Whatever it was, I’m sure it raised a few eyebrows!
